Exit Ticket
Crafting Digital History has been a course where I have encountered many different challenges and achieved many successes, all of which I will explore in detail in this exit ticket. I want to begin by emphasizing how much I genuinely enjoyed the course and its content. Its structure and style were unlike any I had experienced through university, which added a refreshing feel to the content. Throughout this course, I worked on a research project that explored how LiDAR technology can help uncover the mysteries surrounding the fall of the Maya civilization, with a particular focus on what agricultural evidence can reveal. I will organize this exit ticket into three main sections: my research project, my growth throughout the course, and my self-evaluation.
My research project was something I fell fast in love with. I originally chose to research how LiDAR technology can help discover or support previous theories of how the Maya civilization collapsed. After receiving my feedback that my topic was too broad, I agreed that there is too much to cover. I honed in my research and decided to focus purely on the agricultural side of things. Research was tough, but using the techniques from this course like <a href="http://hypothes.is">Hypothesis.is</a> made it that much easier. My biggest struggle throughout the project was bridging the gap between traditional research and hypothetical research. LiDAR is starting to become a more popular tool; however, it has not been fully adapted into the historical space. It has been used to uncover and map multiple different lost or under-analyzed historical sites, but from what my research gathered, actually crossing these maps with deep historical evaluation was minimal. This caused me to reevaluate and switch up my perspective on how LiDAR can be used. I decided I would pair a LiDAR system with an AI model trained to help simulate what the LiDAR map is showing us with known data sets. Using these two tools in unison can help provide a clear picture. This can be done through the LiDAR, creating a 3D model that can provide information like agricultural output, Population density, and environmental factors. While the AI takes this model and uses historical data to run simulations on how sustainable this society truly was. Under the Research topic section on Mixa, I have outlined this process in greater detail.
This course has helped me grow in ways that may not be reflected directly in my coursework. The note-taking and research techniques I learned have fundamentally changed the way I approach new topics, questions, and sources. I feel more confident organizing large amounts of information and building stronger connections between ideas. My current job requires a significant amount of research from articles and a wide variety of sources, and the skills I gained in this course have helped me work more efficiently, understand information, and stay organized under time pressure. Beyond the technical skills, the structure of the course encouraged my curiosity, which has made me genuinely passionate about my research topic. Overall, this course has made an impact on my life and has taught me many things I will continue to use going forward.
I have faced many personal challenges throughout this course and regret not participating to my fullest ability. I feel as if I have learned a lot, but I have continuously struggled to update my vault and post regularly. Based on my previous evaluations and including my Mixa site, I would evaluate myself as a D+ or C- for my lack of participation, but overall outcomes and growth. I want to apologize as I did enjoy the course, and thank you for your time and effort.
